Flying Dog Dogtoberfest

New to the scene is Dogtoberfest, Flying Dog’s take on the traditional Oktoberfest style.

I thought it was a great example of an Oktoberfest.  It started nice and malty, and finished with just a bit of burnt caramel flavor. The hop choice added a bit of spiciness, rounding out the flavor.

I am very picky about my Oktoberfest-style beers, and Dogtoberfest is probably now in my top 5 Oktoberfests.

Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter

Saturday of American Craft Beer Week I tried the Gonzo Imperial Porter form Flying Dog Brewing.

It smelled a lot like chocolate and had a roasted scent to it.  It was a very full and thick beer with a lot of body.  It tasted a bit like bitter chocolate, almost like a dark chocolate.  It left a nice warming sensation due to the alcohol content (~7.8% ABV), as well as a nice chocolate aftertaste.  When I tried this beer, it was a bit warmer, at 60 degrees F, and I enjoyed it from a goblet.

Flying Dog Garde Dog

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to try the latest seasonal offering from Flying Dog Brewery, Garde Dog.  It is a Biere de Garde style of beer, which is a French farmhouse ale, similar to the saison style, but tends to have a bit less hop flavor and aroma.

This beer poured nicely, and I made sure to swirl the last bit of beer left in the bottle to mix in the yeast.  It started out fruity and slightly malty, and had just a hint of spice.  The hop flavor was slight, and the balance was perfect.  The finish was so clean, it was as if I had just had a sip of water.  It was very light and refreshing, and I can’t wait to have one of these on a nice summer day.

Beer of the Day: Flying Dog Kerberos Tripel

Kerberos Tripel
Kerberos Tripel

Today’s Beer of the day is brought to you from the Flying Dog Brewery of Frederick, Maryland, and it’s their Kerberos Tripel (8.5% ABV). It’s a traditional Belgian-style Tripel with a dark golden color.  It has a crisp, clean, sweet flavor with a dry and spicy finish. The aftertaste lingers on the palate with a hoppy bitterness.

This turned out to be a great sipping beer, and I will most likely buy it again.

Do you like Belgian Tripels?  Have you tried the Flying Dog’s version?
